چکیده

Abstract Observations of early vocal behaviours in non-human primates (hereafter primates) are important for direct comparisons between human and primate development. However, observations births perinatal behaviour wild rare, the initial stages behavioural ontogeny usually remain undocumented. Here, we report birth a chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii ) Budongo Forest, Uganda, including mother other group members. We monitored newborn’s approximately 2 hours recorded 70 calls. categorised vocalisations both qualitatively, using conventional call descriptions, quantitatively, cluster discriminant acoustic analyses. found evidence acoustically distinct units, produced isolation combination, sequences akin to adult pant hoots, utterance regarded as most complex signal by this species. concluded that chimpanzees possess capacity produce composed different types from birth, albeit rudimentary forms. Our line with idea repertoires largely present fine structures undergoing ontogenetic processes. study provides rare valuable empirical data on primates.

Genome Sequences of Polyomaviruses from the Wild-Living Red Colobus (Piliocolobus badius) and Western Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus)

We identified with PCR and sequencing the full genomes of the recently discovered Pan troglodytes verus polyomavirus 8 and Piliocolobus badius polyomavirus 2 in a western chimpanzee and a western red colobus free-ranging in Taï National Park of Côte d'Ivoire.

Numerical competence in a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes).

A chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), trained to count foods and objects by using Arabic numbers, demonstrated the ability to sum arrays of 0-4 food items placed in 2 of 3 possible sites. To address representational use of numbers, we next baited sites with Arabic numbers as stimuli. In both cases performance was significantly above chance from the first sessions, which suggests that without explicit...

The development of feeding behavior in wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii).

OBJECTIVES Primates have an extended period of juvenility before adulthood. Although dietary complexity plays a prominent role in hypotheses regarding the evolution of extended juvenility, the development of feeding behavior is still poorly understood. Indeed, few studies have investigated the timing and nature of feeding transitions in apes, including chimpanzees. We describe general patterns ...

Diet and reproductive function in wild female chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) at Kibale National Park, Uganda.

Human female reproductive function is highly sensitive to current energetic condition, indicating adaptation to modulate reproductive effort in accordance with changing ecological conditions that might favor or disfavor the production of offspring. Here, we test the hypothesis that reproductive capacity in female chimpanzees is likewise limited by current energetic condition. We used 12 years o...

Retroviruses in Wild-Born Semi-Captive East African Sanctuary Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii)

Information on retroviruses infections in great apes is scarce, especially for apes kept in sanctuaries throughout Africa. To investigate the prevalence of retroviruses and possible transmission of different retroviruses originating from chimpanzees of different origin (Uganda, Congo and Rwanda), 38 wild-born captive orphan chimpanzees residing in a sanctuary on Ngamba Island were analyzed for ...
